Statements made during an examination, checked against the case file
For lawyers and law firms. Riscontro, by Cryterio, compares what a person states with the documents of the proceedings and shows, with document and page, where the words and the record differ.
BetaRiscontro is in beta: access is by invitation and, until data processing agreements are in place, it is used only with fictitious or anonymised documents.
How it works
The case file
Upload the documents of the proceedings: reports, witness statements, expert opinions, records, emails. Text is extracted page by page; each document's label, title and date can be edited.
The examination
Paste the transcript, upload the record or the audio recording, or follow the examination live with the microphone of a computer or phone.
The comparison
The examined person's factual statements (places, times, who was present, quantities, relationships with the parties) are compared with the whole case file, including their earlier statements.
The review
Each finding links to the document and page, with the passage highlighted. The lawyer marks findings as checked or to discard, adds notes and prints the report.
Four outcomes, always with the reference
Every outcome other than “not in the case file” has at least one quotation. Before showing it, Cryterio checks that the passage appears word for word on the page cited; if it cannot find it, the quotation is discarded.
Contradicted
A document contains an element incompatible with the statement. A possible confrontation question referring to the document is suggested.
Partly different
The statement is partly confirmed and partly different from what the documents show.
Consistent
A document confirms the statement.
Not in the case file
The documents uploaded neither confirm nor contradict it.
What it does not do
- It does not assess the person's credibility or sincerity and does not decide whether they are telling the truth: it describes differences between words and documents.
- It does not produce evidence: findings are working material for the lawyer, to be checked against the originals.
- It does not replace reading the file: it can miss a contradiction that requires reasoning across several documents.
Confidentiality
- Each case file is visible only to the account that created it.
- Automatic deletion after 30 days, extendable, or immediate on request.
- A log of every operation: uploads, opening of originals, analyses, deletions.
- Processing is separate from Cryterio's public fact-checks: case files do not feed the service.
- The text of the documents and the examination is processed by a language model from an external provider (Anthropic). The terms for use with real case files are being defined.
Where the beta stands
The beta is for testing the tool with law firms and defining, together, the technical and regulatory requirements for use with real case files.
- Designed for proceedings and documents in Italian; other languages are under consideration.
- PDFs with text, Word, TXT, email and HTML; scanned PDFs without text cannot be read yet.
- Uploaded recordings up to 95 MB; live, a statement appears within a few seconds and the outcome of a first comparison in 7-10 seconds, reviewed at the end of the examination.
- Recordings do not yet tell speakers apart automatically: a record that names the speakers gives more precise results.
