PMQs: Prime Minister's Questions - 20 May 2026

We are lucky to have the British Standards Institute, the oldest standards institute in the world.
BSI was founded in London in 1901 (as the Engineering Standards Committee) and is recognised as the world's first national standards body, adopting the name British Standards Institution in 1931. The claim that it is the oldest/first national standards institute is accurate.

Last week the ONS announced we've got the fastest growing economy in the G7.
ONS data for Q1 2026 (first quarterly estimate) show UK GDP growth of about 0.6%, the highest real GDP growth in the G7 for that quarter. The claim holds for the most recent quarter, though the UK's lead has not been consistent across all quarters.

Last week, we had the biggest fall in an NHS waiting list for 17 years.
NHS England reported the biggest single-month cut in the waiting list in 17 years, with around 450,000 fewer people waiting over 18 weeks in March 2026, as the service hit its interim 18-week target. The core claim is supported by NHS England's own statistics.

We're cutting red diesel costs for farmers by a third, delivering the lowest rate for 20 years, alongside a record 11.8 billion pounds on farming budget.
GOV.UK confirms a reduction to the rebated (red diesel) duty rate of 3.7 pence per litre effective from 15 June 2026, and the 2025 Spending Review set a record multi-year farming budget. The 'by a third' / 'lowest for 20 years' framing matches the announced cut, though the exact 20-year comparison rests on government statements.

In April, Britain saw the single biggest drop in employment ever since the pandemic. 210,000 people have lost their jobs in the last year.
ONS PAYE data show payrolled employees fell by roughly 100,000 (about 103,000 in the year to Feb-Apr 2026), well short of the 210,000 figure quoted. Employment is indeed falling, but the specific '210,000 jobs lost in the last year' is not matched by the ONS payroll series.

Under the plans that we inherited, fuel duty was due to go up by 5% in April. We stopped that.
It is true that a scheduled fuel-duty rise (the RPI uprating plus reversal of the temporary 5p/litre cut) was cancelled and the freeze extended (at Budget 2024 to April 2026 and Budget 2025 to end August 2026). However, the increase is a 5p-per-litre cut plus RPI, not a flat '5%'; the figure is a loose characterisation.

Today, inflation's come down more than expected.
On the morning of this PMQs (20 May 2026) the ONS published April 2026 CPI: 2.8%, down from 3.3% in March. The fall exceeded forecasts: markets had predicted a drop to around 3.0%, and coverage of the release notes inflation 'slowed by much more than many had predicted', driven by the new energy price cap from 1 April 2026.
